Bodhisattva, Avalokiteshvara / Guanyin, wooden statue, carved root - Qing Dynasty.
The full name of the goddess is Guan Shi Yin which means 'He who beholds the pleading sound of the World'. She is one of the great Bodhisattvas of Buddhism and identifies with the male Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. In Chinese folk religion she is identified as a child giver, and addressed by childless women, as she is often depicted with one or two children at her side, but who in reality represent her favorite disciples.
